Hi All

Is there a manual for the miter gauge itself? I want to make sure that it reads true 90 and 45 degrees, but I'm not sure how to adjust it.

I haven't sprung for one yet, but I am contemplating the Shopsmith MiterSet Segments accessory.

The reason you want the Shopsmith one opposed to the regular one so it fits your Shopsmith Miter Gauge bar.

There is an earlier one, and the segments one, and a discount for buying both.

Your settings are then absolutely spot on, and your 90 degree setting will help you set the indicator on the miter gauge for general miter cuts.

If you have a manual your Shopsmith the miter gauge is covered in the alignment section.

After you have accurately completed main table alignment (miter slots parallel to the blade), you should be able to the miter gauge stops against the blade using a quality speed square or a draftsman's triangle.

After you align the table to the blade you will need to fine adjust the miter gauge. The most reliable way is to start with some scrap stock at least 3" wide and using a stop guage on the miter to ensure exact length cut four pieces at 45 degrees. Using the set screw adjust the miter until you can fit all four pieces together with no gaps on the mitered corners. To adjust the 90 degree stop make test cuts using a reliable square and again use the set screw for fine adjustment. The easiest way to make a stop guage for the SS miter is to bolt a fence to the miter that extends about 12" to the right of the miter and clamp a piece of wood to it for a stop block. You can make an adjustable stop block by various means as a later project. Using the miter bar to make accurate cuts is doable but repeatability and accuracy is easier to achieve by building a sled. There are a number of threads here on building sleds.
