I recently purchased a 10e/10er it came with 2 heads one head only has 4 numbers on the ss serial plate trying to find out when it was made. Also is there any site I can go to that shows how to make a variable speed knob for my motor?

Welcome aboard.
The Shopsmith 10E was sold from November 1947 to late in 1948 when the 10ER was introduced.
The motors that the they came with can not be changed to variable speed, there was a speed changer sold as an accessory for the 10E/ER.

They come up on Ebay but sell in the $100 to $200 range as they are much sought after.
You can change to a DC motor to get variable speed. Skip Campbell,
MKC Tools, is a source for them.
Some additional sources for information on the 10E/ER are:
