By popular demand. I'll post this to get the August thread started.

My wife just started a part time job as a receptionist at a building that houses several community organizations. At closing she needs to turn off the automatic sliding door at the entrance. The switch is above the door and out of her reach, so I turned (quick and dirty) a stick to extend her reach. All work (sawing blank and turning) done on a 10er. Scrap wood from a pallet, one coat of Watco oil. A bit over an hour, start to finish.

update, It works, but the business end is a bit slippy on the rocker switch, so I will need to add a rubber tip or something to give it more grip.

My Aug. project really started in July.
I have started making Cremation Urns for Garden or Innocents.
I have 4 of them in my shop waiting for the finish to cure.
They are just a simple little box, for a very special origination.

I finally got finished with a project that went most of July. We moved our 1300 DVD collection storage from one room to another and I built storage units for them all .... Works better than we hoped. No pics, will take some if interested. Basic box making of 20 inch by 8 inch by 6 inch.

Hardly JPG LOL. I used simple rabbeted corners and floating bottoms (which are actually the back ) open front (top). You can probably tell they are laying on their side (or maybe you can't yet), but I will try to take some pics today sometime.

I was just thinking that nobody really wants to see some basic noob WWing.

OK, our living room (we have a very small house built in the 30's) was half like an English library with floor to ceiling built in book shelves. I built them with 2x12 15 years ago or so, so they are "double" deep accommodating books on the shelf two deep. We are avid readers so it worked well for both of us. We have both become ereaders now and the book space is not as important now, so we changed half of the book space to DVD storage space. We needed space for 1400 + DVD's.

This is the East wall of books and the adjacent South wall was just the same until this month ....
So the books came out and the videos went in ....
Each shelf is two deep like the books were, but to make them easy to access, I built a removable box for the front of each shelf to easily expose the back ...
The left column on the top has a larger than the rest front box so I made a drawer to store small index cards ...
And of course with the box out, it gives easy access to the movies in the back ...
Each box is just a solid wood panel glueup (actually made from reclaimed studs from my office decommission) with a rabbeted corner and floating panel in the back/bottom
It is working better than we hoped, so there is that. I made the boxes pretty quick without a lot of precisiion, but they are strong (seemingly).

Like I said, Laura is happy!

The card 'file' is to identify where each dvd is located - just like a library of yesteryear.

Like the ceiling 'supports'!

I like it! Especially the box-in-front idea. How many hours did all that take you to build?

It looks right in place with the plank & rustic-beam ceiling, which I love. My own wife has been lobbying fiercely for a first-floor remodel, to include plank ceilings. She likes the whitewashed look, which is OK I guess, but I like yours better. Especially with that handsome and extremely comfy-looking leather club chair alongside the bookcase. (If it's actually just a sofa, please don't spoil my illusions )

Yup, card library reference (I also wrote a database program in Visual Studio to keep track ) We also print out a list and keep it in a ring binder on top ....

Not bad for a guy from the East. Vigas and Latias. Celing is 8 inch Vigas with faux special cut Latias fit to not interfere with the actual rafters and insulation.

At first it took me a couple of days per box until I dialed in a "design". Once that was worked out I was building one a day. There were lots of interruptions with helping others, building maint., doctor visits, etc., but it went pretty smooth once I got the hang of it.

The room was a dream one night about 12 years ago and I woke up and got to work with very few modifications. We wanted an "Old World" look and we got it whether we wanted to or not . The "chair" is a love seat (with a matching one opposite it) that we both veg out on for movies, football, and reading. Very comfortable and cozy house. We have lived here for 36 years and remodeled 3 times LOL.
