What is the difference between a ShopSmith belt sander Part #505642 and the current model, part #555355. Would a #505642 work on a current (bought new about 1997) ShopSmith Mark V

There have been a few updates to the older model. You can get the improved dust collection as an upgrade to the old version and I have done that. There maybe other changes to some of the parts but I don't know much about that, perhaps someone will chime in with that information.
As to fitting on your '97 or any other newer shopsmiths it is a done deal.

Is your the older model to which you have done the upgrades? No problems? Since we're only a few miles apart, maybe I can buy you a cup of coffee some day

Small world!
Yes mine is the old one that I got in the mid 1970's. The upgrade is shown here:

I'm sure I could have lived without the upgrade but at the time it sounded like it would be worth it so I did it. I'd say that must have been about 1988 or so just after then announced it. If I remember correctly some grinding was needed but it didn't seem like a big deal to do.
Right now my upper wheel is getting pretty hard to turn and I've been waiting for the right time to rebuild it. Maybe this winter???? If you are getting an older used one that is a common issue.
Sure coffee sometime!
