Missing parts for '61 jointer guard?

I have the old style (61) jointer w/ the metal guard assembly that is unsecured. When I flip it over and look at it, the top of the spring appears to be fastened to the knob, but the bottom of the spring is just dangling there. Shopsmith doesn't have a diagram available for this style, and suggested I just buy the retro-fit guard. I could do this, but being curious about fixing things and liking the copper color of my current guard, I would love to find the missing parts.
It looks like I must be missing some sort of retaining washer / clip that fits into a recess of the guard for the bottom of the spring to hook into, and that the way one loads the spring is to twist the knob to put tension on it and then set it into the hexagonal hole in the table.
Does anyone know where I can get the missing parts? Or can someone describe to me what I am missing so I could fabricate it? What I visualize is a washer that sits in the round recess, somehow prevented from turning (pressure, perhaps by a retaining ring?), and with a slot in it for the spring to hook. Anyone have this kind of guard who would be willing to take a pic for me showing the underside and how this retainer is supposed to work?
I read on another forum a suggestion to cut a groove at the base of the shaft with a dremel tool for a retaining ring, or drill a hole for a small clevis pin, to hold it in place. i haven't used this tool yet, but I can see how without a retainer the guard could easily pop up.
Thanks
