I finished the wooden bench for it today early, then started on the machine.
I know I razz some here with there ER "Show Ponies", I can/do understand all the work that it takes to make a show pony with such an intricate machine and all the parts to paint, polish ect, Kudos to you that do it!! :D I can appreciate your labor of love. ;)
The ones I have bought are working and not rust buckets, just give a Mineral Spirit wipe down, new belts, and clean up the oxidized Aluminum and some lube to the SC.
So for the bench I wanted Doug Fir 4x4 for the legs, messed that up, I got dense Cedar but it has weight to it. Apron is just pine 2x4 and 2x6. Got my head on and went to my good lumber yard for Doug Fir 2x10 for the top, I could have gotten Doug Fir 4x4 for the legs there, brain fart.
Hit with Shellac with Trans Tint dye in it to give it the aged/Patina look of original then some oil Poly.
To the ER, started on that this winter, spun the tubes on the Greenie to polish them then Pentrol coated.
This afternoon started on the ER cast iron. I want to thank whoever on the idea of a dowel with wet and dry instead of a cylinder bore polisher from McMaster Carr. I got a 1 1/2 and 1/2" dowels, on the Band Saw but out an 1/8" slot on center about 1 1/2" deep, then cut a piece of green Scotch Pad, slipped into the slot and cut to length to make the circumference, added some PB Blaster and cleaned up the inside diameters of all cast iron.
Then started on the painted surfaces, wiped down with MS, then 0000 steel wool with JPW, shined it up and got rid of any wood gunk/smuck and oxidation on the paint. Head Stock and tail piece and lathe thing to do tomorrow yet, plus the Aluminum stuff.
Ya Ya Dusty pics to come!!! ;) :)
Need to get some handles from Hogslow, luv to get the red ones from Skip, but a bit pricey compared to the Hog, but Skips are original length or a bit longer, the Hogs are only 6" and black knobs.
I am not going for a Blue Ribbon on this one like you guys have Won/deserve at the State Fair.

Lover, a LONG time ago, I got handles and knobs at
McMaster-Carr, and they worked just fine, but did NOT
look "original." I think 6 of them cost me $15 or so.

Pics tonight Dusty just for you :) !!!
A great day in the shop, spent most of it on the HS, I had a small interruption, moms sis came over/in from 5o miles away which I knew she was coming, but planned a party here with moms other 2 sisters in the area, and a few friends and nieces, but I had to do nothing, the lassies all had good afternoon, and I was in the shop after saying hi to all.
Man that clean up on the paint with a green Scotch Brite pad and mineral spirits to get any gunk off and the apply JPW with 0000 steel wool makes it look like new, except to the original paint runs in spots. Cleaned up all the steel, ect. Tomorrow the motor and Head Rest and a few minor parts, pulley guard and Lathe tail stock. Then assemble tomorrow.
A few questions on that. Since the instruction manual does not discuss this issue since it comes assembled to the base plate and all, and mine is all apart. My thoughts/guess is square and mount the base plate to the bench, set the base plate in the Drill Press position and lock it in there, drop in the way tubes to the resting pads on the base plate and then tighten the Allen Set screws. Then bring to the horizontal position with some temp support at the other end and slide on the carriage, HS, SC, then set and mount the head rest with room for the tie bar and room on the tubes for the other things that go on that end, and set the tie bar.
I cleaned up the pulley shaft real nice, just like the other ER here, Skips pulley would not go on without force, just like the other one, I need to talk to him about that, it is a .001 ish too tight. You need to be able to slide it for belt/pulley lateral adjustment/alignment, with the speed changer sheaves, just like the motor one.

nice Skou, the balls are a nickle .98, the 6" shafts are $32.00 each
http://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-preci ... s/=13z464q

Plus if you look at the ends of the original they are not threaded to the end, they are smooth the last 1/4" and a round radius on the end to go into mating surface

Add one step.

After positioning the headrest tight to the tie bar, move the head rest 1/8" away from the tiebar before marking hole location.

That allows for clearance as it is raised from vertical.

FWIW, I would mount the headrest first before adding the HS,Carriage and SC.

You need to 'reset' the tiebar to eliminate any possible twist anyway.
