I am new to woodworking and a new Shopsmith owner. This may be a silly question but where do you get wood for projects. We have multiple lumber yards but no one has wood, that I would say is suitable for projects like bowls or even spindles.

Craigs List in some areas is great for local wood mills. But again without knowing where you live, God helps them that helps themselves

I did not mean to be harsh in my previous post, I am one that helps the helpful, but not an Anne Sullivan.
I am not a turner, my nephew is, and I know a lot has to do with moisture content, there are a few great turners here that will chime in.

Sorry I did not even think to give my location. I live in North East Oregon in a small town called Irrigon, just a few miles from Hermiston Oregon.

Look at CL for a local mill also. "Wood for sale", I bet there are a few by you, but local woods I would guess.

I thought that an interesting question, so I did a Google search for my own area. I found looking for "lumber" was not enough, so I searched for "wood", "rough lumber", "millwork"...

You might contact any fabricators (cabinet shops and such) to see if they can point you in the right direction.

In addition, search out "woodturning" for clubs and organizations!! We have a great turners club here in No. Virginia... members of such organizations are quite eager to "learn ya up" and help!

If you search for "hardwood dealers in Oregon" you may get some results. I just did a search for Florida and a site popped up that I did not know existed

Its a bit pricey but you can get wood for turning at Woodcraft or Rockler. I get my bowl blanks at Rockler about $10.00.Pen blanks at either.

For more general projects I like Wall Lumber who is online.

His 20 board foot ups bundles are a great deal for domestic hardwoods. Really great for folks on the west coast because its a flat rate regardless of your zip code. I have found the quality to be great. The 8/4 stock could be cut and/or glued up for turning. I have a hard time matching his prices here in California but we do have a local Macbeath Hardwoods that I frequently use, however, if you have to pay shipping cost its not such a good deal.
