So a question for you that live in that area??
If I was living in Eastern TN east of Johnson City in hill country, out in the country, what could I expect? How bad would I have been hit with rain and wind? Trees down, power lines down, country roads blocked, and for how long, ect? I am guessing a week on road clearing, power lines about the same, I may need to get a LP gen set if I move there after mom. The place will have a wood burner/pellet stove for heat and aumbians and can grill out but!!!???

My brother lives in nearby Kingsport, and he hasn't mentioned any damage.

This article indicates that coastal folks retreated to the Tri-Cities to escape the storm path.

I doubt Tenn felt much of anything from Matthew. The West. Coast of Florida hardly felt anything and it a lot closer to the storm than Tenn. Biggest problem in the Carolinas is the soil. It can not handle heavy water like the sandy soil in Florida. The soil gets waterlogged, then tree roots get loose and any wind blows them over. Add to that run off and you have a mess.

I think that is where I have been looking, Shady Valley area, about 30-40 miles East of Johnson City. Near Butler, close to or in the Cherokee Forest area.

While we live just south of Indy our youngest daughter, her husband and daughter lived in TN for over 20 years so we made regular trips there. We also like the Smoky Mt area. Our daughter lived in several locations, Maryville, Alcoa and the last at Tellico Plains just N - E of Chattanooga. Our daughter and her husband now live near Boseman MT and their daughter just moved to northern Vermont.
Since our daughter lived in TN we tended to watch the weather in east TN and not many Atlantic storms get west past the mountains...
We were through the very area you speak of just a few weeks ago (we still like to go to the east TN area). Pretty country. We were moseying home and didn't want to come back on I-75.
Regarding Mathew, My wife's youngest sister and her husband in Florida sat the storm out (I thought very foolishly) at Melborn FL. They got lucky and the storm moved a little farther east and lost a little wind speed. They had no damage but it could have been really bad, they live out on a damn island and it is the last place I would want to be to ride out a serious hurricane. About 20 people stayed instead of evacuating. Her sister and husband didn't even board anything up... or make any other preparations. They said that their windows were supposed to be good for 120 MPH winds but I said that doesn't count if somebody's BBQ grill hits it. I keep remembering driving from Pensacola to New Orleans many years ago and seeing the results of a big one (Camille???) where for miles even parking lot concrete pavement was ripped up with a lot of it standing up on edge.

OK Michael, just to place things into perspective.

I think you are familiar with tornadoes.

Now think of a tornado with gully washer rain.

Finally think of it lasting several hours as it approaches.

A bit of relative calm as the center passes over.


Then repeat as it continues away.


i.e. a very nasty beast.


E TN is hundreds of miles 'inland' with the apple at cha n mountains between.




Oh BTW tornadoes do prowl there.

I am a little north east of butler. it is between mountain city and Bristol on US 421. we are soroanded by national forest.
