Here is an interesting listing on eBay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shopsmith-Morti ... SwUEVYC5Z6
Is that really a SS product? Has anyone seen one like this? All hold downs I have seen from back in the 10ER days forward have been the same. The hold down rod is the same diameter. Was this something after market at some point?

I think they just have it assembled wrong.
Owners Manual for Mortising System (pdf)
They have #3 - Adjustable Sleeve on #8 - Rod instead of in the bottom of in #2 - Quill Attachment where it belongs.

Yep!
Sleeve goes in quill attachment.
Rod goes in hold down.
The rod and sleeve should not be together even though they are both 5/8"(od/id).

Yep! I wondered why there was a hole in the end if the large sleeve.

That hole is where the mortising chisel goes.

Yes, I "wondered" not "wonder" why the hole.

And now I can't get Del Shannon's "My Little Runaway" out of my head! Thanks John!
