small parts sled

Before I asked this question, I searched this site but did not find.

I have a plan from Woodsmith to make a small parts sled. The plan said to get and I purchased 2'x2' of Birch plywood in the 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4 width to make the sled.

I have the ShopSmith Cross cut sled. I just don't have a "regular" sled.

I also have one extra miter fence guide to use.

My question(s): I noticed the main saw table of the ShopSmith is 17 1/2" wide by 22" long (estimate). The plan is for a 24" square sled.

I put the 24" Birch wood on the table and found it to be oversized. I unfortunately am a visual/instruction person. Have trouble modifying on the fly.

what size sled do you use?

Would the cross cut sled be enough even for small parts?

Thanks again, sure do rely on this forum

Greg

Follow the instructions the sled will be fine.
I does not matter that the sled over hangs the table.
If the size prove to be a problem to you after you build it you can always cut it down.

For truely small parts I like to use this really simple "sled" that attaches to the miter gauge. Since this post is from 2007 there are a few new people here that might have missed it......... or a few of the older members that have forgotten it. I use it regularly so I'm not apt to forget it.

I too like Ed's idea for a small parts sled.

The sled I've been using is 16" x 30" with 10-5/8" from rail to rail.
