Since Ed posted his find from Menards I thought I'd post mine from Home Depot. Picked up some fine quilted maple and planed it down to 1/2". Going to rip it into strips and use it for my next segmented vessel.

That is some beautiful maple. I'm a sucker for pretty lumber when I come across it. I can't pass it up.
Back in the late 80s I was at Menards and was looking through their oak boards. I found one that was 15" wide. I couldn't pass it up. I bought it and set it against the wall in my garage. I finally used it up a couple of years ago when I wanted to build some raised panel doors that needed 15" wide panels. It sat in my shop for 30 years before getting used.

Wow, gorgeous wood! And next, you're going to tell us that it cost the same as their plain garden-variety maple, aren't you?

Actually, it did cost the same. Bear in mind however, They charge by the linear foot, which sounds good but isn't. My hardwood supplier was actually less expensive, but closed on weekends.

About a zillion times over the years as I was cutting firewood I would (and still do) run across a piece of log that has "special" grain patterns and I struggle with the decision on whether to stick it back somewhere or go ahead and cut it up and toss it in the load of firewood. Kind of saddens me to think of how much pretty wood I have converted to smoke and heat over the years... But then again the house needs to be heated too and I can't stick it all back.
All the little Woodmizer needs is gas and for me to find some time and energy. I much prefer cutting boards from anything I can and just burning slabwood and limb wood.
I used to get big loads of slabwood from an Amish friend with a large commercial saw mill operation. I have an old heavy IHC farm truck with a dump bed and I used to get huge strapped bundles (about all I could get on the truck) from him. He would load me with a huge fork lift with a log grapple and charge me $15 for loading time. All but the big heavy stuff I usually sawed up with a light skill-saw using cheap carbide blades. Some of the time I cut it with a tractor powered buzz saw. Heavy stuff was usually cut with a chainsaw. I also have a stash of some stuff saved from that slabwood in a barn loft that I deemed too good for firewood...

OK, Sterling and I have all you beat on the price.

Couple months ago, sterling found out about some
trees, bulldozed over, not too far from his house.
We went out, in his truck, with his chainsaw, to
investigate.

Found some river red gum eaucalyptus.

We have since been back twice, with a third trip some time soon.
We've harvested about 3-400 BF of usable lumber, and LOTS of
it is highly figured. I turned a rolling pin out of it, and 2 hours
later, it felt like an ear of corn.

Is that segmented pictorial from Woodturner Pro? How do you like the software? Do you use it with a Ring Master? I have been thinking about getting it.

Not from Woodturner Pro, but his new (and still in development) software, "Segment Pro". You can download it for a free trial at www.woodturnerpro.com. The learning curve on this program is much easier than woodturner pro. I designed that profile in under 15 minutes!
