DC3300 - suggestions, upgrades, etc??

My son-in-law is passing on a used Shopsmith DC3300 to me and I am planning on replacing a shopmade dust collector (which uses a ShopVac with a Dust Deputy). The DC3300 will be connected to one piece of wood working machinery at a time and none is very big.
Don't have my 'new' DC3300 yet yet but understand it is in working condition.
What I would love to have is any suggestions for things to look out for and what possible improvements I might make in the future. For one thing, I would love to have a cyclone added to the input line - the Dust Deputy with ShopVac has worked very well for me - I get very little dust in the bag in the Shopvac - most winds up in the drum under the Dust Deputy. But I rather suspect that the Dust Deputy is too small for the DC3300 (2-1/2" port and 330 CFM) and the bigger one costs a bit much for my budget at the moment. All comments and suggestions most welcome!!

I suggest waiting until after you try the dust deputy with the dc3300 to determine course of action. I use it that way.

I would suggest that you test your DC3300 for some significant amount of time before you do anything. Then (if not done already), read this thread and all those that it links to:

JPG - do you notice much decrease in flow using the Dust Deputy with the DC3300?

Is it correct to say that a dust collection system using the Dust Deputy is a "closed system"?
If it is, does it not go without saying that whatever is pulled into the system will be passed through the system will minimum adverse effect on air flow?
Yes, there will be some loses but my bet is that those loses are not caused by the Dust Deputy.

Dusty, the one thing that is not known is how the system resistance of the Dust Deputy (DD) responds to increased airflow. It could be that the DD has a non-linear response, e.g. the restriction in the DD dramatically increases over a certain flow rate. That would also have an impact on the DC-3300 and, if one had the flow rate characteristics for both systems, you could (to some degree) 'guesstimate' how things are going to even out. The DD is only specified up to 150 CFM so who knows? JPG is using one so a real-world test is underway! I will probably give it a try when I get things up and running.

I would suggest a remote switch. I use the Long Ranger from PSI and find it a real convenience. I have enough hose to reach across my garage shop without having to move the unit.

Where do you find the specification of 150 CFM for a dust deputy? I have been using one for over a year and my shop vac puts out much more that that. Heck, my bathroom vent puts out over twice that!

Interesting. How do you determine the CFM capacity of your Shop Vac. I have a 10 gallon version and I'd like to determine what mine is. "The hand on the end of the hose test" indicates that mine is sucking but how much. It sure is not as powerful as my DC3300.
The Dust Devil is recommended for use with no less than a 150 CFM air flow (the rating for the vacuum).

Would you please post a picture of this setup (Dust Deputy attached to a DC3300). In my minds eye that is just two dust collection containers in series. Which one ends up with all the dust? What am I missing?
