I built a loft bed for my niece last year. I looked at a lot of online plans and combined them. I'll see if I can dig out my sketches. One suggestion is to make the bed and the desk as separate pieces. That way you can complete them as separate projects and can keep the desk even if the bed has lost its usefulness as the kid gets older. In the short term, you can just do a desktop without the drawers if you want to provide a simple working space while you finish the desk. I built the bed at my house and needed to move it to hers, so much of the design was to ensure I could take it apart, transport easily, and re-assemble. Here it is nearly done before I painted it.

What a cool project! Are those shelves at this end. That would be so cool for a kid to sleep on top and have workspace below.
Nice design and workmanship!

Yes, there are shelves at this end and I plan to (eventually) build a free-standing desk to go at the far end. The shelves are built strong enough to work as a ladder on all sides. This project was a great success for me since my niece loves it!

My son had a twin sized bed that sat on top of a bookcase and an armoire. The thing that I liked best about it was that the bed was held in place by metal dowel rods placed in holes instead of being one big piece. This allowed me to build a separate base for the bed when he did not want it up high any more.
