I see a lot of different blanks for turning to use as wine bottle stoppers, wood, acrylics and acrylester. Can wood turning tools be used on the acrylics and whatever acrylester is???? Also it seems that the standard threads for the stoppers is 3/8-16,although the commercial stoppers I have in a kit are much smaller. Ideas????

I don't know but I have never seen where there are different tools for acrylic. Pen turners use acrylic blanks all the time.

Larger threads are better to a point. I see nothing wrong with 3/8-16. Many commercial companies use smaller fasteners or what ever to save money and boost their bottom line.

Yes almost anything can be turned. I think some stuff is better off not turned but hey what do I know. One which I found strange was CD's, yes the ones that have music on them, well until you turn the stack of them.

Yes wood turning tools work on most materials but you might need to modify your approach to things a bit for different materials.

If you haven't got a mandrel yet she has two models that fit the shopsmith, #2SS-155 and #2SS-157. They look like they are on sale so I think I might get the second one.

I found a few left over stoppers in a drawer when I was cleaning up so I think I might turn them as gifts. Should get a few more supplies from her anyway so adding the mandrel is not a big deal. It's nice when someone makes a shopsmith solution and since I was asking I should at least buy one, right?

She also has some good general information on turning stoppers and some great examples of them and other unique turning things.

I've seen her site and saw the mandrel for a SS. Price seems good. I wish they had blanks so it could be a 1 stop shop

when turning the plastics and non ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, etc.) reduce speed. Make sure your tools are sharp and be prepared to sharpen often.

On plastic dull tools will either chip your material or worse overheat the material and melt it.

On the non-ferrous metals the tool and the work can over heat and either you get no cutting at all or poor results or even worse; the material "Work Hardens" and then you're done and hopefully have not destroyed a tool. (If the edge turns blue, you either need to temper and re-harden or replace the tool.) and YES I have turned aluminum, copper and brass with my 1955 Greenie.

6061 aluminum turns like a dream with sharp HSS tools!
Also when turning metals make sure you clean up when done and NEVER use your standard dust collection system. Instead, use a shop vac that has been washed out so absolutely no wood dust or wood flour remains inside or let the cast offs hit the floor and use a broom (not your hand DAMHIKT) when you are done.

Hot metal shavings in a confined space with wood dust is a recipe for disaster!

Who needs a wine bottle stopper anyway??? Here is what I get out of 750ml bottle.
A glass or 2 while cocking dinner, and depending what it is for dinner a splash in it, then the other 2 glasses with dinner, if any left over wine finish off as an after dinner drink. Then a nappy in the recliner.
Now if a 1500ml bottle I dont do, then it is right to the box wine size. 4 bottle size in the box.

Who says wine bottle stoppers work for just wine bottles? Not me. How about olive oil do you open that and finish the bottle? If you go to Ruth's site and do some reading it will give you some more ideas as to what these are good for or just use google to search on bottle stoppers. Want to have some more fun search for bottle stoppers images to see how creative people are.

I'll be turning a few in the up coming days, none are intended for wine bottles....... just saying like beer isn't just for breakfast anymore think of bottle stoppers not being just for wine bottle or should that be olive oil bottle any more.

I was in Park City, UT 2 weeks b4 the Winter Olympics, what was that, 2002 or 4, for Masters Down Hill race week.
I was out for dinner, and wanted a Long Island Ice Tea, which has 5 "shots" 1 oz of different booze in it and a shot of Coke a Cola. They can only pour a total of 1 shot/oz in a drink. He said, "I have a special measuring system", he pulled it out, and showed me it, My mothers sewing thimble she puts on her finger was bigger then that!!!!
Worst was Mothers Day, 1975, on my way out to Montana for spring bear hunting, stuck in Salt Lake City airport for 4+ hours, dry as the Seiara dessert.
