I have a higher capacity dust collector than the shopsmith brand (800cfm)and think that I would get better performance by cutting the little 2.5 inch port out of the saw guard and installing a 4 inch port. Has anyone tried this yet?
I would also cut a 4 inch port the bandsaw. Anyone done this?

I've done the bandsaw. Used a new toilet flange. My 4" hose fits it perfectly.

It seems like there should be a lot more air flow without the restriction from the 4" to 2.5" adapter

You are moving the same amount of air but through a larger passage. Is it not to be expected that it would feel like less air is moving. Is there enough air moving fast enough to keep the dust particles suspended? I would think yes.

Maybe!
Recall that SS discontinued the 4" conversion. Lack of sufficient velocity was IIUC the reason.
