It a Rockler thing:

They also sell a chip deflector add on:

Back in Oct. I was in the store and looking at the dust collector and added one to my possible 2017 purchase list. The guy mentioned the addition of the chip deflector would be coming out so I added that to my list as well.

Of course it will have to adapted to fit a shopsmith. That might be a bit of a deal since the area to mount it is getting mighty crowded if you have the lift assist taking up space. It is for pens and other smaller items but I guess it would work with spindles as well.

So I'm wondering if anyone has one, either adapted to the shopsmith or on another lathe and what do you think of it?

New fiscal tool budget starts as of today so the first purchase will be this combo deal:

The two parts are normally $79.98 so you save 13%.

If you are interested let me know and I'll post how I end up mounting this on the shopsmith. Well I might just post it in one of my "Today in the shop" posts. That is unless I can't figure out how to do it.

You can always mount to such things to the floor... :) Gravity usually makes a decent attachment method. :D
One of my best work light stands in the farm shop is an old hospital IV stand with a smallish but very heavy cast iron base with 4 casters. The upper section of the post will adjust up and down like a mike stand and locks in place.
Before I gave it its own table I had my chainsaw grinder mounted on a stand I made by welding the post from an old bumper jack to an old disk blade from a farm disk. It served quite well. A pipe would have served just as well but the old jack post was staring at me from the scrap pile. :)

That looks like a slick set up. I put a mike stand next to my lathe with the intention of fabricating a jig to hold the 4" hose from my Harbor Freight dust collector. It's been there for three months and no jig! I might just order this instead. :)

Looks like a nice piece of kit.
Personally, I am not seeing the value of the chip deflector, so will Interested to see how it works for you.

For lathe work it could mount to the rear hole in the carriage. (that sounds rude, but not intended to be :) )
That would have the advantage of automatically tracking with the toolrest when turning longer spindles.

Not only do I have the kit but I have it mounted! We have to run out so I don't have time for pictures or details yet but I can say you can think unistut. We use to use it at work and I designed a lot of labs so I'm pretty familiar with it.

So later.
