I recently purchased a pro planer and replaced and sharpened the blades. All went well but after replacing the blades there is a slight ripple visible to the eye. It is not deep but noticable and will not sand out in just a stroke or too. Any suggestion as why I may be getting this result Believe the blades are set know good and don't about in or out feed potential causes if it is that at all.

I suspect that your blades are not all equal height. Each blade is cutting to a different depth than the others. Sort of a ripple effect results. If this is the issue, a much slower feed rate will lesson the visibility but will not eliminate the "ripple".

I agree with Dusty. The blades are not all set at the same height. How did you set the knife height? Do you have the SS knife setting gauge? Some here think it is no good but I have been using it for years with no problem.

I never said the SS planer knife gauge was a "slam, bamb, thank you mam". I said it works just fine.

Nothing is a "slam, bamb, thank you mam" by your own admission based on your search for perfect table alignment. I think you said in your recent thread on dual dial gauges that when you checked with one of the "conventional" methods there was no real difference.

Technique as you have stated is the answer. We used to check Air Force aircraft generator bearing liners (by hand) with a Starrette digital three point bore gauge. The tolerance was 5 to 7 tenths. Without proper technique you would fail every one.

The SS planer knife setting gauge works just fine. Crude, maybe, but it works when used correctly and attention is paid to the details..

Waves happen regardless of feed rate. Used the magnetic set up. One on each end and it supposedly draws them up then tighten gently in a sequence. Guess I will try resetting them. I think I will number them and reset one at a time.

Remember, there are leveling screws under the blades. They should be raised (or lowered) to set the height of the blade before tightening the wedges.

I reset the cutter blades and ended up with a slight trace of wave. Thanks for the information and good tips!!!
