I have a guess but this if from a internet search so maybe one of you woodies can tell me what you think. I won't post my answer because it may influence what you think.

I think this is going to become two bottle stoppers.....

End grain is really interesting:
I'm unsure of the wood and have not tried tuning it yet, much less finishing it so that is always interesting. I'm waiting on this item from Ruth Niles

Quartersawn black locust???

My first thought is some sort of fir or other evergreen.

The second picture looks like fir, though I can't imagine that's right.

Red Oak

After looking at a lot of possible woods I think this is Lati, White Wenge, Yaya, lots of names same wood. The end grain looks like it and I know it hard to tell from my photos but in real life with at magnifier lens it matches really close.

Oh, Ed - You are sometimes a tease! Doesn't look like a domestic wood.

A non-scientific guess is Ceylon Satinwood. Don't ask for the scientific (Latin) genus and species. I can't even pronounce them, let alone spell them.

I picked it up at a woodcraft store. So I looked up the Lati and they have it listed in two sizes, pen blanks and knife scale blanks. This piece is neither of those, 2" x 2" x 6" but it could be the store has different stock then the catalog. It was in a sale bin so it also could be the last of it kind in the store.

My concern is not so much what kind of wood but if there are any ill effects from it. Toxic woods sometimes make it into stores and unaware buyers find out the hard way, and by buyers I mean me. Once was enough so now I like to check the wood to see if I need to be extra careful or just careful.

I have to go back to the store next week so I can check the pen blanks to see how close the wood looks if they have any.

If in doubt, use toxic wood precautions. Can't go wrong.
