Saw the ad below on Craigslist tonight. What a tool!

Free Pallets! Perfect for burning or DIY crafts.

Wood is flammable which is great because pallets are made nearly entirely of wood, so you can burn them. I like to set up mine into an effigy or funeral pyre and a put on Chumbawumba and remember days gone by. But I'm not trying to tell you what to do.

Or you can do some DIY with them, I've seen people make garbage furniture with them a couple times and it always looks terrible. I like to ask them if they made it.

I'll be like, "Hey did you make this?!"

And then they're like, "Yeah I did!"

And then I say, "I can tell! It looks like shit."

Thats just me though, I don't want to tell you what to do.

Or maybe you feel like a wall in your house is kinda dull and you want to make an accent wall? Nail some crummy wood onto that wall! Don't sand it, because then it will be smooth and less dangerous. Just nail it onto the wall! Now you have a Trash Wall. But really, I'm not telling you what to do.

My pallets are free, which is a pretty great price. It's the lowest price available. Research it.

I worked in the military and DOD for 40 years. I would not even use pallets for fire wood let alone anything else.

A pretty weird listing.

In my book he gets extra points for honesty.

They're great for bonfires, but other than that I wouldn't want them.

Yes a bonfire out in the open is probably OK. I would never burn them in my wood stove in the house.

I use quite a few pallets... Mostly to stack stuff on and be able to move it around the farm with a set of forks on a tractor. Seems to be kind of novel use.

They don't last very long sitting out, maybe a couple of years but I want to make a few from treated lumber that I want to last better. Even heavy paint helps a lot. Setting them up on about 8 to 10 bricks to keep them from ground contact also helps a lot. I used to use a lot of pallets to keep big round bales up off of the ground over the fall and winter.

Got any Osage Orange on your farm? I have 25 year old stack of Osage firewood with absolutely no sign of rot. And it's roughly as hard as your tractor forks. A forestry professor at VA Tech once told me that the stuff is used to line concrete piers, as bumpers for ocean-going freighters. If you used it to make pallets, you'd probably have to pre-drill holes for the nails.

The reason I still have a stack of the stuff is that it burns hotter than blue blazes, and pops, crackles, and throws sparks like crazy. Good fun. It quickly ate up the cheap OEM tubular steel grate in my fireplace. No problem .. I replaced that with a cast iron grate. Which the Osage also incinerated over time. But when the sparks set our family-room carpet on fire, my wife banned burning it indoors, forevermore.

Good deal, that. Older and wiser now, I still have the raw materials for a lifetime supply of mallet heads.

I use pallets(raised 8" off the ground with blocks) to stack firewood on however, I wouldn't try building anything with them and certainly never burn them. We have no idea as to what has been sprayed on the wood!

I've heard of some nasty chemicals being applied to pallets.

The pallets may not be worth the conversation, but I can tell you they make great firewood. Last five yrs I was in Alaska, heated with palletwood in my woodstove. Used recip saw(nails impossible to remove). Periodically, clean firebox of nail accumulation. Mostly South American hardwoods.

Lots of things burn well. That does not mean I would burn them in my wood stove. Made in South America, oh my. Who knows what they were treated with. No regulations concerning toxic chemicals.

Then where have they been used in their life and what was stored and leaked on them.
