It is that time of year. I am going to do it different this year. I have all of the information pulled together and I am ready to start filling out forms. Just gotta get forms (1098s, etc).
It is going to be real easy this year. No major itemized deductions and no income from diamond and gold sales. All I gotta do now is brave the crowds at the court house to get the blank forms and latest instruction booklet.

You have reminded me of the last time(s) I stood in line at the courthouse.
In Montana, (a while back) automobile license plates were issued at each local county courthause. New plates every year. (Stickers weren't invented yet and the prisoners needed something to do.)
First in line got the lowest number and they were issued sequentially. One year I got plate # 4-32. (the 4 was for Missoula county.

I haven't stood in any lines for forms for many years. Rather than stand in lines, I simply download the forms and instructions I need and print them at home. Then finish them up and mail them and the work is done.

This should be an easier year for us too. No house sale or stock stuff to deal with and like you I'm looking forward to this year being straightforward and pretty quick to do.
Of course it seems to take a while for all the statements to come in and most are not going to be here for a while yet. We have two of them already, but the banks, credit unions, and others don't have to get the forms out until the end of the month.
I'm not going to start yet, I'll wait until I can get to the online filing stuff "Free File Fillable Forms will be available January 23, 2017" so that should be a good time to get started and then wait as the other stuff comes in. I like to file somewhere near the first week in February since I get a refund most years.

PS I don't own any diamonds or gold and never have so I have no idea how that stuff is taxed but I'm sure the government gets there fingers in the pie somehow.........

I am fortunate to have an IRS office locally.
No line, walk in, grab stuff off shelve, walk out.
I use online fillable forms, but the printed ones for reference.
Created a SS for all forms. Biggest task is form changes that require changing them.

If you do it without Turbotax, it is FREE. Download the forms directly from IRS and save money.

H&R Block tax program for me and electronic filing with direct deposit. Plus the program checks for mistakes and anything I might have missed. And after doing it all these years it has all my forms filled in I only have to add this years numbers.
