Continuing to tweak my DC-3300 upgrades (1 micron bag upgrade still pending) and today's question has to do with the (now discontinued) 4" adapter. One thing I am considering doing is modifying or replacing the input adapter 'box' on the DC-3300 (i.e. the input box that presently has three 2-1/2" ports) with a straight 4" port. I will then put a single 4" to 2-1/2" adapter on that port - The important point is that the new port will be straight in line with the fan housing inlet.

If anyone has a picture of the SS adapter, I would love to see it. If anyone has converted their inlet box to a 4" port, I would love to see that also.

And, yes, I know that you should not try running a 4" dust line as the velocity is just too low for good chip transportation. I will be running 2-1/2" line .. in fact, probably only one 10 ft long flex line.

No need to buy one (and Shopsmith doesn't sell it anymore). I was once told by Shopsmith that behind the assembly where the 2 1/2 hoses enter, you will find a standard 4 inch hole waiting for you. That appears to be confirmed by the drawing. Just detach 22, 23, 24 & 25. http://www.shopsmith.com/service/dc3300 ... iagram.htm

Somewhere, I thought it was a Sawdust Session, there is a presentation by Nick of the dust collection system used in the shop there are Shopsmith. In that presentation, I think, I remember a discussion about a home built adapter for 4" hose. A three way gate.

You thinking of the 'three hose octopus'?

If so that was to adapt to a 3" pvc pipe system.

I like the single bigger hole approach 'more gooder'. HMMMMMMM!

Thanks for the picture from the catalog - looks like they used a more-or-less standard 4" flange adapter (which was exactly what I was going to do).

Unfortunately mounting the adapter is a bit awkward in that, under the SS plate on the outside of the existing input housing, the end of the inlet pipe is closed off. Which just means I have to cut a hole (about 3-3/4" diameter hole)to match the ID of the adapter flange. Not a big deal as it is plastic.

Remove the entire input housing.

Just removing the inlet housing is NOT the simple answer. You really need many of the functions of the inlet housing: i.e. matching to the curved surface of the tub, sealing the interior of the tub from the outside world, providing a tube to link the outside world to the inlet of the fan housing to name a few things that come to mind.

The simplest solution would seem to be to: remove the name plate and mounting screws (item #22 and 23), cut a hole in the inlet housing (item #25) and then mount the new 4" bulk head adapter (with a some RTV for sealing and self tapping screws. That will give you a straight shot into the inlet of the fan assembly and probably pick you up some CFM. I plan on a then adding a tapered 4" to 2-1/2" adapter and I am off to the races.

If I wanted two inlets, Rockler has a nice Y-adapter (4" to a pair of 2-1/2").
