Big Gator Drill Guide

found this site for a tool to help drill straight hole in flat stock or on the corner of a board or center of a rod or pipe
looks like a good tool to have
cause also be used with a drill press

Rockler and or WoodCraft sell the same thing, check prices. Nice for a hand held drill, I would not need it on ER dedicated DP.

Too small to be very effective IMO.
Might help with pipe/tube but more helpful drilling into a square tube 'corner'.
Wonder how soft/hard it is.

Actually it works quite well. I got mine when I was doing some drilling on rods and was having issues with getting the alignment right on the drill press. Even after center punching it the drill wanted to go where it wanted to go and especially if you were not right on with the alignment. This solved that.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it a must have but if you are having issues drill things like rods or tubes and want a helping hand then by all means buy one. I only have this model so I can not speak to other brands.
It is hard by the way. I can not tell which holes I've used and which I have not so at this point I don't expect to have to ever use the lifetime warranty.

Does it really 'work' or merely obscure the wandering drill bit?
Drilling small holes in small od stuff ain't easy.
Short bits(or buried in the chuck) helps.

I was very happy with the results. You need to locate the hole location then clamp the guide on. There is no where for the clamped guide and work piece to go so yes the hole is right on. The guide is sitting on the work piece and the guide is supporting the drill. It worked for me.
Keep in mind the one I have is 1/8" to 3/8", 17 hole. I don't know if they have any other sizes or metric but this covers a lot of the holes you drill.
Since it hard to tell in the photo the guide is about 7/8" tall and of course you get a bit less of that due to the v-groove in the bottom but you still get about 5/8" of support and that is more then enough to get the job done.
If you don't clamp it to the work piece then it is not going to work well, so as to say always clamp it.
