Quick question: new to me 520; I just put together the jointer, but in assembling the fence it appears to angle up as it approaches and then goes over the outfeed table. This creates a sizable gap by the time you get to the end of the fence, such that a board less than an inch or so will actually slide under the far edge of the fence. I'm thinking the clamp must be bent?

I'll try to attach a couple of photos once I can figure out how to do it.

The rear end of the fence should clear the outfeed table, but not by that much.

Yes the clamp will be a good thing to post a pix of.

Mine does the same thing, I think it is normal.

The upward tilt is generally caused by over tightening the lock handle of the fence. That causes the fence bracket to widen the opening in the bracket and the fence to lift further. The clamp can be squeezed but it has to be done gently so as not to crack the clamp bracket. My fence only rises about 1/8 inch from the outfeed table. I kept the old bracket as a spare after squeezing it closed. It aint perfect but it wil work.

As does mine. Not to an inch above the table but significant. Sorry I didn't include something that would have sized the gap.

Here is a picture of mine. The gap is about 1/2" with the table set at about 1/32" cut. Keep in mind the gap will enlarge as the cut gets deeper.

I think it is normal too but it is not a tilt. If you look at the in feed side the gap is parallel to the table hence no tilt. The fence on the out feed side is narrower than the in feed side so it has a larger gap. I did not measure but mine looks to be less than 1". I have two jointers here. Jointer1 is one that came with a power station I bought locally. It is an older jointer with a metal blade guard and a red fence handle. Jointer2 is one that came with my 510 bought new in 1995. It has a black fence handle and the new blade guard.

As you can see in the pictures they both look the same and also look the same as the first picture in the SS catalog.

I think that pix nailed it down(mine jointer is buried).

The nub that rests on the infeed table should be about 1/8" off of it when the fence is tightened.

Yes there is considerable clearance between the end of the fence that overhangs the outfeed table. That clearance is required so the infeed table can be lowered and the fence not interfere with the outfeed table.

That clearance must be at least the maximum depth possible.

So I think what was initially described and questioned is 'normal'. I think we did not realize where that gap was located.(I did not anyway)

A note: Do not let a gorilla tighten the fence clamp.(see previous post re clamp deformation)
