Yes, another shelf for the Shopsmith Mark 5. I have a 510 (more or less set up as a lathe most of the time) and I really wanted a shelf or box or something under the way tubes. But I was paralyzed by 'overly grandiose planning' syndrome. One day I just got tired of trying to design the perfect thing and just went ahead and, using a scrap piece of plywood, some pieces of 2x6 material and some odd bits of this and that and built myself a simple shelf that hangs on the way tubes underneath my 510.
Simple, crude but I love it. Catches the sawdust from turning wood, gives me a place to lay my turning tools and, with a few holes here and there, gives me a spot to store the lathe chuck key on the front edge. Took maybe 4 hours to do. Jeepers, I have got to do that more often - stop designing and do some building!!

Some days I "plan" myself into an absolute stupor...
It gets kind of like "writer's block".
If I can "let go" of an idea long enough I like to make up something close to my thought, generally out of scrap stuff and see how I like it or what improvements it might need. I think much of the time if you make about 3 versions the 3rd one will be pretty good.

I used to be that way, but with learned confidence and past mistakes even after over thing and planning, for shop projects I do plan, try and figure out how I will use it then go for it. There is always, ohps, I coulda done this!
Some times after the fact it is a easy mod.
I have learned, you usually cant think of all.
I have an anal retinal friend, back in the early 80s he designed his house, did that 1/4" foam board thing, looking down with out a roof on it, floor plan, had swing doors and all. He has 2 PHds at the time. He agonized over it for a year before construction.
Well he missed one, the service door from the attached garage, to take something into the basement where his shop was the doors swung into each other.
Had to close 1 b4 you could open the other, PITA when hands are full.

Only if his head is 'inside'!
