510 base lock question

i was able to spend a bit of time in the garage today, have the 510 down to the main assembly.

on the base there is a set screw, page b-5 of the white book calls them the base and base lock. anyway it is not in perfect alignment, i will attempt to upload a cpl pics. this is on the hinge end

looking for suggestion to correct.

as eager as we are to use the new machine i will spend alot of time going thru checking alignment, cleaning, polishing, and lubrication.

am attempting to add pics, but there is a machined indent the setscrew "base lock" fits in and its out of alignment

gotta figure out how to make pics smaller it looks like

There is nothing 'to correct'. It is that 'way' intentionally. It provides an inexpensive 'over the center' lock. You are definitely not the first to not understand that(it is counter-intuitive). BTDT :D

You are calling it a set screw. Is it the knob that holds the machine in vertical position? If so that is the way it is supposed to be. Don't worry.

it just looks like the scew screw should seat in the machined indent fully and this one is off

Look at your last pix. Notice the beveled end of the screw/knob. The 'dimple' is also tapered. When the screw runs against the dimple, the screw is longer at the center. The dimple is 'deeper' there as well. Any tendency for the base to rotate counter-clockwise(way tubes moving back towards horizontal) will be prevented until the screw is backed out.

You will 'discover' the effectiveness of that 'alignment' when you attempt to lower it without backing the screw out.

Also to prevent consternation when you 'discover' that the vertical position of the way tubes is just past 90° from the bench tubes. Again an intentional 'over the center' design detail. i.e. it leans away from falling back down.

ok now that makes sense, i had to kind see it in action so to speak, kinda like the sidestand on HD, simple idea that works very well
