My brother got me The Big Book of Weekend Woodworking for Christmas. Inside was a neat looking candle holder. It called for a 1/2" ball for the dowel topper. A couple years ago I was given a 4"x16"x1" piece of unknown wood to turn a new wood stove handle. Job complete. I found the cut off when looking at my wood and decided it would be a good choice. I then decided it would be a present for my friend with the wood stove. The layout was actually fun. Instead of the ball topper I turned a topper from a cutoff. Fun, simple, neat project I think. My friend loves that it matches the wood stove handle.

Utility stool Fun learning project. Made from a single 2x4. After milling my stock was 1-5/16". Made adjustments and made it work. This should do well for my little shop. I can reach most of the ceiling with it.

I made similar candle holders several years ago but my design called for small diameter candles and only had four levels. I think yours are much more useful.

Thanks. I used the 1/2" "Vigil" candles. A little less than 5" tall.

Could you tell us about the finish on the utility stool?

Sure! I used a couple coats of Minwax "Jacobean" stain. I then sprayed a few coats of Valspar Project Perfect Top Coat Satin finish.

The candle holder is beautiful! Love both the design and the implementation. The stool's great too...I love the way the stain brings out the grain so strongly, almost looks like some kind of expensive exotic wood.
