Power Switch stuck powered on

Hi all,

Has anyone seen this?

Initially I noticed that when switching the SS on, it would not start. I then turned it off and back on. Normally it would work. Then later I found that it would just not turn off!! It was stuck on! The only way to get it to turn off was by pulling the power cord out of the outlet :(

So do I need to order a replacement power switch and rewire the new one in or is this more serious?

Thanks.

Adam

Just get a new switch. Make SURE ya notice where each wire goes.

On the back of the switch there should be 4 prongs, remove the wires and insert them on the empty prongs. That is if you have the Locking Toggle Switch.

This video link along with the chalk board should help.

You can test the functionality of the switch without dismantling. Simply unplug from the wall and using a multimeter measure resistance (ohms) between the two blades of the AC plug. Switching the Mark on/off (still unplugged) should result in a change of resistance (from a dead short to an open).

Hi all, thanks for the super fast replies....

I checked the switch this morning before work. The switch is the "newest" style according to the video with just two wires connected to the switch. I tried swapping the connectors (moved from the left side to the right side of the switch) and nothing happened. The SS didn't even power on. That seems weird to me, but maybe not....Maybe the, let's say, positive pole is HOT and the negative pole is not HOT and that's why it does not work in the current position. I need to try swapping back to the left side and see if it powers on regardless of switch position again.

In the mean time, I ordered a new switch. I've VERY disappointed to say that a new switch costs over $40.00 shipped. Frankly, that is absurd!! This switch should not cost more that $10.00 shipped two-day. The lady taking orders was very nice and explained it was a specially made switch made just for SS. So what!! If SS wants to design in special switches and parts, let them pay for the design and build. So it's not the switches fault, its the designers fault for not choosing a standard part that was readily available. If feel pretty cheated right now by ShopSmith. Not a happy customer.

Shopsmith is NOT the only source for a switch. There are others available that form, fit, function compatible.

This is but one; however, it appears to be only two wire.

Thank you very much!!

I found a functionally equivalent switch at Ace Hardware and I'm back in business. It is not 220 capable (double pole), but that's fine for now.

Thanks guys!!

What is the 'horsepower' rating?
