In what position does the speed dial have to be to replace the speed dial onto worm gear? I unsnapped the spring on pork chop and cleaned it etc but when putting it back I could not until I pulled motor pully sheve together as in low speed. This allowed me to put slack into the sheve on the quill. I screwed the set screw almost all the way in and it still hits the sheve in high speed> Can any one give me some clues?

First of all, yes Bill Mayo was a great source of information and friend. May he RIP.
I put it together and was still and one inch from getting it from one inch on dial to slow speed. It went to fast speed and still did not touch the set screw screw from going further. I have it almost as far in as it can go without getting out of nut to lock it in. Not sure of what my problem may be. besides that it runs well. Any advice is appreciated

I am unclear if you 'replaced' the speed control with a 'new' set of parts, or rather 'replaced' the initial speed control after cleaning?

If the former, perhaps the High speed stop screw is incorrectly too short.

Do realize that the motor belt wear will affect the 'range' attained and until the dial is aligned to the high speed stop position, the dial indication does not mean much.

At slow, which direction is it 1 inch off? I assume you are referring to when the idler puller will not close further.

Your description of the loop is disconcerting. At fast is when the loop is pulled on/off.

Fer the record, fast is when the speed control touches the stop screw, and slow is when the idler pulley is fully closed.

I cleaned and replaced the original speed control system. It turns freely and goes from low to high fine. The belt is about 1/16 away from edge of the pully. It goes beyond fast about 1 inch and the clicking begins. I screwed set screw in as far as I could and locked nut. Did you state the set screw may be to short?

Do be aware there are some variances in the vintage of speed control assembly you may have and what you have effects some adjustment changes.

Read the Bill Mayo Headstock Improvement Kit write-up that I mentioned to see if that may be the source of your issue.
