Recently I have heard stories on the radio of people who had gotten bits of wire from BBQ cleaning brushes stuck in their throats and had to have them removed at the hospital.

Last weekend when I was shopping at Costco they had a wooden paddle for scraping BBQ grills on sale. It looked like a great idea, but as a woodworker, (and cheap ) I couldn't see myself paying $20 for a bit of wood.

So today while I was home for lunch I grabbed a scrap piece of oak. A bit of work with a hand plane, SS bandsaw, SS disk-sander, some hand sanding, and a bit of paste wax for the finish.
and here ready to go to work.
Maybe half an hour start to finish.

I like that and want to give it a try. Can you provide the dimensions?

I didn't actually measure anything, I just grabbed a piece of scrap wood that I thought looked about the right size and cut/shaped it by eye.

The man in this video will give the dimensions he used but it isn't critical. Look at the manufactured ones of sale, they range from the size of your hand to 20 inches long, 3 to 5 inches wide, maybe 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick, and bevelled on one or both sides.

So now you can go to the hospital to have splinters removed

As an added note there is a very easy way to clean your BBQ grill. Put them in the oven on self clean mode. Cleans them effortlessly and also the oven.

True, but that doesn’t provide an excuse for a woodworking project.

So, I have used it a few times now and the grooves are pretty well established. (high heat works best to char the grooves).
It does a good job to scrape loose the gobs of BBQ sauce etc. These are ceramic coated cast iron grates after scraping. A small amount of teriyaki sauce is left, but the wire brush doesn't get it al either. (Tilapia fillets make a cameo appearance on the right.)
