Help needed replacing quill bearings

I've been using my shopsmith 510 as a lathe to learn woodturning. All was going well until I started getting spiral cuts and couldn't a smooth cut as previously. The spindle in the quill had a slight movement on it so I checked the bearings and there's a very slight give and think this is the source of the problem.

I have decided to replace the bearings and have managed to remove them OK. My problem is that I am not sure what size internal damter bearing to buy as the internal diamter on both quill bearings is smaller than the actual shaft. Quill spindle is 16.98mm internal diameter of both bearings is 16.7mm.

Just to complicate matters when I look up the codes on the bearings they give an internal diameter of 17mm. Am I too worried about tolerances here?

What bearings are you planning to use. I would recommend 6202ZC3 for the outer bearing and 6003ZZ for the inner bearing.

6003ZZ - 17mm x 35mm x 10mm
6002ZC3 - 15mm x 32mm x 9mm

I just checked the machine I have under repair on my bench and the front quill bearing is a 6003 with two rubber seals manufactured by Nachi of Japan

This is to address the spiral cuts on the lathe. When you rub the bevel and pick up the cut you may be moving the tool too fastvand this will result in the cut looking like a screw thread. Don't embarrass me by asking how I know that!!!!

There are several versions of the two bearing quill, I don't know that they all take the same bearings so be aware. To bad our old friend Bill isn't here to help us out on this one............

I have found that when dealing with the two bearing quills if you have the one with the roll pin in the middle make sure that you mark the shafts
so that they go back in the same orientation. If one is turned 180 deg the holes do not line up.

The bearings are a tight fit. They must be pressed straight onto the shaft.
