Does this require a star wrench?

So, this inside the engine compartment of a German-made car. Couple of questions. Is the proper wrench for this a a star wrench? And is there any way (short of buying a set and trying them one at a time) to tell which size/number I need for it?

It will more then likely be a metric size but the good news is a whole set is pretty cheap.
I had to do a repair this spring on something that had the security version so I got this set:

Less then $10 then shipping depending on if you are a prime member and then tax from those of us lucky enough to live in a state that taxes.

Thanks, Ed. How do I tell if I need the tamper proof version versus some other?

The tamper proof bolts have a pin in the center, thus the hole in Ed's set. Your pic does not show a pin in the center.

Your right. When I read German car I though of the project I had done and when right to the 5 point. If you have a German car then you still might one of the sets I ordered but it will not work with the fastener pictured. In that case you might want something like this:

I like to get the security bits because I have sets of the others but never seem to fail that I come across security fasteners but the plain type and the security types both work for your fastener.

Thanks, Ed and JPG. Problem solved. My local Harbor Freight had a reasonably priced set of 6 point star drivers which worked.
