Here's a project that I just completed as part of our basement remodeling. My bride purchased this cabinet at a second hand store and asked me to re-purpose it as a bathroom vanity. The sink is was a free second hand unit I found on CL. And while not original I thought my "U" shaped drawer came out well. I added a skirt and raised it 2" and made wood drawer slides and drawer stop. It's a painted cabinet and that's the color it came in. I added 6 coats of poly to the top.

Here ya go Ed. One pic before I started and one after completion. Hope it answers your question(s).

I see an opening at the bottom. Have you given any thought how you will clean under it?
I.guess you could seal the bottom with a board painted blank and fastened on the inside of the
Bottom front.

I added a skirts on the front and both sides, painted black, to raise the whole unit 2". Essentially, they are flush with the floor. The side skirt is indented about 1.5" from the cabinet side and the front about 3", a nice toe kick. I don't think cleaning will be an issue.
