Well, found a guy on craigslist selling his equipment about 70 miles away and went to check it out after work last night. '80's MK V upgraded to a 520, and a bunch of add ons. Gotta inventory it tonight.
Feels like Christmas!

Hmmm, I still have my '07 510. Drooled over a 520 in Dayton in 2008. So many tools, so little time.

You will not be disappointed with the 520. I have always said the 520 was the most significant upgrade to the MK V until the Power Pro.

Was that the one on Craigslist that had the long tubes and a bunch of other stuff listed for $600? That looked like a great deal.

I too believe that he will not be disappointed with his 520 but tell me, please, anyone - other than a heavier and possibly more "accurate" rip fence what significant improvements does a 520 bring to a 510?

It is all about the fence system. That is what the 520 upgrade is. A beefier fence with T tracks all around. Precision extruded fence rails. A fence with rock solid wedge locks on both the front and back. Not the cheesy bent piece of steel with a rubber boot on it to hold the out feed end of the 510 fence. You did say more accurate quotes or not.

Some people are happy with the 510, maybe it depends on which one you get?? Now in my case I got a 510 basket case and I was never very happy with it alignment wise. It could be something was damaged or I was doing something wrong, who knows.
I did ask if anyone hear had any reason to not upgrade to the 520. At the time no one mentioned one, not even the cost. I really didn't want to spend the money but I sure glad I did. I'm much much happier with it as a 520.
This is not to say the 510 can not be used and used well, it is how ever not a 520. I've heard it said the there is nothing wrong with a 510 that $575.69 will not fix. (Cost of upgrade at present).
Given the choice in order of preference for me is the 520 then the 500 then the 510. Perhaps if I had gotten a different 510 the order would be different?

It was another one that was down south of Colfax.
Got a '81 model upgraded to a 520, band saw fully upgraded, jointer, 6" sander, air compressor with tank, biscuit jointer, dado blade, craftsman molder, box of saw blades, a carter stabilizer, dozen or so band saw blades, a one way scroll chuck, the chisel sharpening guide, flexable arm and vac attachment, all the manuals and odds and ends.
A little rust here and there but every bearing runs free and smooth and the headstock is as quiet as a mouse, the speed controll is smooth. And the kicker, an aluminum tabled planer on a stand. It's so quiet I couldn't tell if the blades were actually running. The castor wheels are chewed up though.
It was obviously well taken care of.
