Dusty:
I spent a week down that way in 2003 and know just what you mean.
Chuck:
Yes, we had our big day on Tuesday. It started out as "Dominion Day", in recognition of the start of "The Dominion of Canada", but after a hundred years or so, folks wanted to distance themselves from the perception of colonization so it is now called "Canada Day"
The "Queen's Day" you referred to is known as "Victoria Day" and is celebrated on or around May 24th, originally to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria, but now meant to honour any reigning monarch.
Of course here in Quebec it is called something else as a certain (large) element of the population want nothing to do with the Queen or Canada for that matter. But that's a whole other story.
Enjoy the day!
