I am cleaning up a 1982 Mark V headstock. When I went to remove the quill mechanism the domed washer will not fit over the woodruff key. Anyone else had this problem? I have never had this problem yet so I am little perplexed. When I refurbished and cleaned up my 1956 Mark V the domed washer slid right over the woodruff key. I really do not need to remove the mechanism I can clean the headstock up and even paint it with it still in. Removal would just make the work so much easier.

IIRC the spherical washer will "just clear" the woodruff key but the key MUST be fully seated.

That said, what is preventing thee from removing the key?

The washer does not clear the woodruff key. The key is sticking out further then I have seen one stick out before. I have tried to reach in with pliers to get it seat further so the washer will clear but with no luck. Everything thing I read says the washer will barely clear the key well this one barely doesn't clear the key.

I have even tried to tap the key out of the shaft lightly with out notching the key or the shaft but that hasn't worked either. I will try that again tomorrow walked away for the night.

The key is a tight fit in the shaft groove. Careful wedging under the exposed ends will get it started out. I am guessing rust is an issue.

Doesn't look like it but you never know. I will try again in a few weeks after vacation.
