Repair or Tune Up Locations

I recently acquired a Shopsmith, Mark V I think, from my son-in-law. Is there any place near Greenville, SC where I can get it "tuned up"? It does turn on, but there is smoke coming from the saw blade area.

Smoke is never good. Is this when you are using the table saw mode to cut a piece of wood? The primary reason for smoke from a saw blade is a very dull blade. More details of what is exactly going on would help.

Smoke from the blade when cutting is either a dull blade (as JSBurger suggests) or an alignment issue. Particularly if you are experiencing smoke during rip cuts, it is likely an alignment issue.
You can send a blade out to be sharpened or buy a new one (Shopsmith has a sale right now); but I don't think there' any place you can take it or send it to get it aligned because it is likely not to hold alignment when being shipped or moved. Accordingly, get a manual or read the many threads on alignment that are here on the forum.

Stop making smoke!!! Smoke not good ever. Make sure that the smoke is not coming from the motor lest you burn the motor windings out. An older machine should be checked completely prior to serious use. I Don't know anything other than friction that would produce smoke in that area. How long does it take for the smoke to start? Does the smoke smell like wood or something else?

With the extensive information in the manual, plus all the information here, it's actually pretty easy to tear down, inspect, reassemble and align your Shopsmith yourself! And given how heavy they are and how much work it is to disassemble and pack one for shipment, that's actually probably less work and expense.

What part of the Upstate are you in. I live in the Blue Ridge area above Greer and could possibly take a look at it with you. I have some experience with these machines.
