Dual tilt mystery solved

Visual observation can solve a bunch of questions. In this case those of us who have the dual tilt my have missed this little gem. As we know the knob that locks the tilt in place doesn't just unscrew so you can take it out.
Ever wonder why? Well I did and today you will not have to wonder any more. If you didn't wonder why well then stop here because you didn't want to know, right?
I'm not going to explain it to you but just show you the pictures. It is that simple.

I never wondered why because I never tried to remove mine.
So I guess the obvious question is why?

Guilty as charged.
As I said above I never tried to remove the lock knob. I just assumed (I know
). It seemed to me the OP was saying the knob was tight regardless of the position. That is not the case. Who would have thunk the knob was like that? I sure would like to talk to the engineer that designed it to find out what he was thinking.
So the question still remains, why?

To keep it from falling out!
BTW that first pix indicates 4 turns possible. I assume the hinge pin prevents that much range.

So this is the only knob in the 70 year history of the SS we are worried about falling out? Yes I saw the rolleyes!

The actual number of turns on mine is 1-1/2. When it is not attached it turns in farther, it is limited to when it hits the bar.
Also I wonder if one were to say use a channel lock if you could over come the o-ring and if that would leave bits of o-ring that would at least for sometime make it difficult to turn. I'm not going to try it.
There are other places on shopsmith equipment where things are retained, sometime with a C- or was it an E-ring. Now I'll let you figure out what parts I'm taking about since it is a good mental exercise.
