Looking for a lathe for turning bowls etc.

Realize this is the early vintage MAGNA 10ER and that price seems high to me as I have bought several out of the Dallas area for half that price or less that also had the speed changer attachment that you will truly need for turning bowls.

That accessory alone goes for $180 to $200 on eBay.

You need slower speeds for bowls. I have several models of the Shopsmith Mark V's, one 10E and 4 10ERs'.

I only turn bowls on the 10E/10ER units with speed changers.

If you are looking to spend $600 to get there that's fine.

Visually it appears to be a relatively rust free 10ER.

Part way down the page you will find a link titled My Google Drive which has files too large to post in the forums. There is a host of things there, and under tabs for the 10E & 10ER you will find fully restored PDF manuals for the 10ER and much useful information, all free.

There is also a document titled Buying a Used Shopsmith Revisited that discusses much of the newer models and mentions the inventor and the company that made the one you are looking at.

Thanks for the information. I did buy the tool for 360, according to your reply I may have overpaid, but I think it will get me started down a long road of upgrades and replacements. That's what hobby's are for it think.
I appreciate access to all the information, I will dig through it over the coming week. I expect I will be back here with questions soon.

Hi I purchase and rebuild 3 of them and all of them has the speed changers. Two of the I got 250 each out of and the other 400 because it had more accessories. They go 150 all day long in Michigan and not refurbished and some with speed changers. Speed changers alone are worth around 125 but I would not recommend you get it but it is your decision.

I look forward to hearing more about your unit as you service it and bring it into production.

Investment cost is relative based on market, just how far one has to travel to save money, and the desire to get started now, or wait until one shows up that is less, that you missed buying by 20 minutes.

Congratulations on your purchase. Before you tear it down, make sure you understand the way it is assembled, especially all the set-screws that are perhaps a bit out of sight.

The Shopsmith 10ER Users Group at Yahoo is also a great resource. You have to join, but it is free. Give Skip some time to approve your application, manually. It is not automated.

Take pictures of yours as you disassemble and reassemble, even video.

Here is a google slide deck with pictures of the 10ER I purchased. There are parts here that I dont think fit this rig, and I would be interested in selling/trading for parts I need, ie speed chager.
I appreciate anyone sharing knowledge. All I can do at this point is ask questions. If you have any issues with the slide deck/pictures, comment and let me know and I will do what I can to correct.

The stuff that 'does not fit' is Mark 5/V stuff.

The miter gauge does indeed just drop down into the miter gauge slot in the table. The hold down is unusual for a 10 ER, but not surprising. The miter gauge appears to be a 10 ER version.

TGhelonger table insrts fit the Mark 5 table. The squareish ones fit the 10 ER. The bottom one is a jig sawinsert.

The center thingie is a mortise bit holder. The hold down is not apparent.

That thing in #7,8?? I do not recognize.

The tool rest fits a Mark V.

There is a speed changer on eBay right now. Item #382142254965. It is in very nice shape and is buy it now for $160. Shipping is only $13.60. That is pretty much the going price for a speed changer. If you are serious about getting one I would not hesitate to grab this one. It does not appear to have any damage. They are not extremely rare but they don't show up very often.

It has a great deal of information on the Mark V parts you have extra that you can easily sell on eBay to offset the cost of a speed changer for your 10ER.

Also, on the main page there are a host of other links to drawings that really will help identify what pieces those are. Some side by side drawings are helpful in areas to help narrow down what Mark V it fits such as Mark V-500, 505-510, 520. For example the tables and carriages on 500 are smaller than 505-520 ones.

Once you know what they are, look for visually identical comparable items being actively sold on eBay to get your base price range for your pieces.

Selling them individually all at the same time is recommended as a potential buyer on eBay can view all your items for sale, picking and choosing what they want to buy and allow you to bulk package items to potentially reduce shipping costs to them.

As JPG stated you have quite a collection of extra parts, and they have some value.

Look at the 'other items for sale from the seller' with the Speed Changer Item #382142254965 that John Burger mentioned. Restrict it by further selecting Shopsmith to get at the 20 items for Shopsmith 10ER he has for sale.
