Any recommendation for a downloadable video editor. My current 'need' is to 'crop' about 5 GB out from a 8 GB file.

VideoPad video editor is pretty good, but needs a lot of resources from the computer:

For "splitting" video files, you might try MKVcleaver:

There others, some with minimal cost (20 bucks) that are outstanding.
Let me know if these work .... :/

If you're running Windows and at some point in the past you installed the free Windows add-on suite, "Windows Essentials" (aka "Windows Live Essentials"), you may already have Microsoft's "Movie Maker" app. Look for "Movie Maker" in your list of programs. If not, unfortunately MS discontinued it in January and the download is no longer available from Microsoft, although it may be available from other websites.

I have and looked at Windows Movie Maker. Did not discover how to 'truncate' an existing file.
Thanks to Rjent - downloaded Videocap and was not successful there either(loading "8 gb" files is SLOOOOW)!
However I 'discovered' that there is room for that alledgedly "8 gb" file which was only 3 + gb(actually 8 hour file). So It successfully burned to a dvd with some room to spare.
Now full disclosure time! That 8 hour file was created by capturing on a computer file that was streamed from a VCR using composite video and audio fed through a gadget attached to a USB port using software created for that purpose(package for $8.91 from Newegg/China). The VCR tape was 150 minutes long. I watched it up to 120 min and let it run as I went nite nite assuming that the VCR would stop it all when the tape ran out.
Guess what!!! I was still 'capturing' when I got up! 5 + hours of blankness(snow) after the 'end'.
I have not figured the time/gb but it is less than I thought. 4:3 aspect ratio kept that low I assume. Seems like about 400 mb/hour.
Any way thanks for responding. The DVD has been 'created'.
