2 bearing quill runout and motion

Does anyone have a specification for the maximum loose side to side play a new Mark 7 quill should have when it is fully extended and not locked (when used in a drill press application)? In this case, I mean how much you can move the end of the quill shaft from side to side with the shaft not turning (motor off).

My old 500 seemed to have less play (subjectively) when fully extended than my new Mark 7. I don't have a dial indicator (yet), so can't provide exact numbers, but perhaps someone else has checked this out. The motion is easy to see (it's definitely more than a few thousands).

I have a question into the service dept, but thought I would ask what owners experiences are.

Per this Shopsmith videotip, Nick Engler on behalf of Shopsmith said new 2 bearing quills have just .001 runnout.

That is true. That is the run out of the spindle to the quill body. As he also says there is additional play between the head stock casting and the quill body. My guess is that is what ARCretired is seeing. Is it excessive in his case? Only SS can tell us.

Yes, in reply. I'm talking about looseness between the quill body and the main housing, with full extension, quill unlocked. For any operation where the quill is locked, this is a non issue. When locked, there is no looseness (of course). So mostly drill press type of operations are when it could be a problem.
