Belt alignment

I recently acquired my Dad’s SS. It is a 510 that he bought new in the early 90’s. It has not been used much in the last 6 or 7 years. While checking the SS out, I found the poly-v belt needed replacing When I replaced that I found that the quill spring looked to be bent so I ordered a quill spring and housing. Upon receiving that part, I found the reason the quill spring was damaged. The drive screw head was broken off so I ordered the pinion, screw and woodruff key.
I finally got all the parts installed and turned it on. It did not sound right so I shut it down and looked into the problem. The belts looked to be out of alignment. I re-read the instructions and looked through the forum to see where I went wrong and re-installed the poly and drive belts. Looking at the belts they may be slightly out of line with the poly belt being slightly closer to the motor side than the drive belt. The poly belt is on the spindle so that 2 threads are visible (it is in the 3rd slot from the motor side). The poly belt also is against the eccentric brushing. The drive belt appears to almost be riding up both the fan and floating sheave (I spun the speed control back to slow by hand while turning motor).
I am scared to turn it back on as when I did last time both belts rubbed on something and I got some very slight fraying before I shut it down. Any ideas as to what I did wrong and how to fix this problem?

I am not doing well at envisioning your problem but I offer these comments/question:
Which side of the belt is being frayed?
My poly-v is riding with 3 threads visible.
The ends of the shafts (Drive Sleeve Assembly and the Idler Shaft and Sheave Assembly) should be in alignment (vertically).
This might help:
Thanks Everett for the image.

Like Dusty I am not fully understanding the situation. However I will also try to say something that might be useful.
First the motor belt. It's position is controlled by the motor/pan. The belt rides in/out(down/up) the motor pulley(fan/floating sheaves) when the speed control is adjusted. That all be normal. I cannot perceive a way to misposition all that easily/inadvertently.
Now for the not so simple part.
I am assuming you have the older(original) eccentric sleeve.
It may be mis positioned, which would shift everything on the idler shaft in/out. The third groove is the nominal location of the poly-v belt(subject to opinion). Yes the important thing is the poly-v belt runs perpendicular to the pulleys(so the belt runs flat against both pulleys).
Is the groove in the idler bearing aligned with the set screw on the eccentric?(my greatest suspicion) If you did not get into that area, it may be the cause of your original frayed belt problem.
Gotta run be back late aft.

I have one thread showing on the drive sleeve with the poly belt's edge right on the 2nd thread. The ends of the shafts are not in alignment and I have no idea how to fix that issue. The diagram is for a Mark 7. I have a Mark 5. I will try moving the poly belt and see what can be done with aligning the shafts. Thanks for the ideas.

I agree that the motor is most likely not out of position.
The eccentric sleeve is the original. There is no set screw in it nor do I see where one would be. I do have a screw with a washer that sits above the eccentric sleeve and idler shaft. I either read or saw on a video clip that there is an eccentric sleeve with just a split down the length of the sleeve 180 degrees from the eccentric bushing slot. This is compressed by the clamp bolt just below the idler arm shaft running through the headstock casting to hold the eccentric bushing in place.
Thank you for the input. I am not sure how to explain the problem any better as I am new to this. I tried taking pics but it is hard to get any that show it well enough to be of use.

Not sure if it will help but here is a link to the Sawdust session where Nick shows how to change and adjust the belts. Hope this will shed some light on what is going on.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Any picture might be of help. One from the side showing the belt location and another showing where the idler shaft area from behind would be good starters.
The position I try to use is 3 notches in from the left but the idler shaft needs to be in the correct position to allow that to work. A first guess is that is not the case.
When viewed the belt should look straight, if it looks tipped to the right or left then it is not right and no it should not be rubbing.

I suggest you watch sawdust sessions #23 - drive train rebuild. The video could help on several of your issues and it will give you a point of reference to discuss the issues you are having. It helped me with a speed control issue I was having recently.

I have just started removing the belts once more. I will attempt to take pictures after I have the belts back on ....unless I somehow get lucky and I get it right this time. Reviewing the sawdust session again in case I missed something else. Will post back soon. Thanks to all for the quick replies of help.

Someone should have jumped on me for this mis-statement. The ends of the shafts are about 3/4" out of alignment (no where near aligned vertically). I know better than to make hard statements like I did without going to look. The drawing that I posted very clearly depicts that.
