OK I hate sanding and anything I see that might make it easier and faster and perhaps even better is looked at with eyes on spending some money to get it.

Just the other day I got an email from the MLCS E-Club with a new Oscillating Hand-Held Spindle Sander. I use to watch Norm using the Porter Cable one he had and wanted one so bad. However that never happened and then the stopped selling them..........

My second chance?

It will sell for $110 but introduction sale gets it to you for only $80. So they twisted my arm and I gave in. I have one on order.

You do know that the lower guard on a 510 works as a dust collector don't you? It doesn't get it all but a lot more then without..........

The sander arrived late in the day. I did take it out of the box this evening and did power it up san any sandpaper just to make sure it runs.

The first thing you notice is the weight. I don't have a good scale for this sort of thing but it is about 5 pounds. It needs to be heavy so that is a good thing.

It has a speed dial, 1 to 6 and anywhere between. The low setting, 1 gives you 1800 rpm and 50 oscillations per minute. The fast setting is 3200 rpm and 90 oscillations.

It come with ability to use 4 drum/sand paper sizes. The small is 1/2", the next up is 3/4" and then 1" followed by 1-1/2", they are all 3" long.

There is an edge guide that can be used with both the 1" and the 1-1/2" sizes.

There is a dust port which I will be most interested in see if I have a hose that fits an if it works.

It has provisions for mounting upside down on a bench, have to see if I have a use for that feature, perhaps it will present itself on a project or two.

The stroke would appear to be maybe a 1/4", just visual at this point so don't hold me to that.

When I get some time with it I'd do more of a review.
Not so crazy about the color.............

but it will be harder to lose that way.

I got to use the sander today. It works as well as I hoped.

Below are pictures of a before and after of some end grain on a piece of scrap. I also checked it for square after and it came out good for that too. I can see using this for a lot of touch up jobs that are not ones I care to spend hours on getting near perfect.
After a few passes of the sander it looked like this:
Much faster and much easier then doing it by hand.

I'll now order more sandpaper for it, I think it is a keeper.

I have thought about an idea like this one where I mounted a few things under the shopsmith table on a 500.

I have not looked to see if it would fit but if I go that way I'll post some results if there are any.

After installing the table raiser on my 500 I pulled the table insert and stuck the sander up underneath and it looks like it might fit.... at least at this point I do not see a problem..... but I have not done it.
It might be a while before I do anything more with the idea.

Looks Great Ed. keep us posted.. I was thinking about using a router plate in a router table with it. I'm still in the planning stages but will post when i have completed it.
