All this posting about turning gave me the bug so I glued up some of the leftover bubinga and maple from the liquor cart. Time to sharpen some chisels and make some dust.

This is going to be good.

If the tools are sharp and the cut is correct, you shouldn't be making dust (until the sanding phase ). You should be making shavings and peelings, even in dry wood.

Ouch!

Had some limited time in the shop today but managed to get the blank roughed out.

I can't tell by the pic. Is that expanding glue or yellow pva?

Well just when you think you've got turning figured out the goddess of turning returns to remind me "not completely". Had the grab of the century on the bubinga this morning. Tore the bowl off the glue chuck and the bowl literally went rolling down the driveway. Bubinga is one of those woods that has a big disparity in hardness between the end grain and the long grain. Probably best left for segmented bowls. I was going slow and the chisel was freshly sharpened so for me this comes under the stuff happens category. I am gluing it back on and tomorrow will try again.
