10E /ER Motor

Which motors are correct(from the factory) for the 10E /ER? I have one with an AO Smith and one with a GE motor. Are they both correct ? Are there others? Thanks in advance..Joe

I got one with a Dayton 3/4 hp and one with a Powr-Kraft 3/4 hp.

They did not come with motors. There were 1/2 hp and 3/4 hp motors sold separately that were made specially for them (the capacitor mounted on the side), but the motor mount was designed to be very flexible in what would work,
All three of mine have different 3/4 hp motors, two look old enough to be original, one looks newer. None of them are branded Shopsmith.

Both mine are A.O. Smith, but different models.

From what I've seen, 70 to 80 percent came with
the A.O. Smith 1/2 HP motor.
Like has been stated above, there wasn't a
"right" motor. If I had to guess, Monkey
Wards had the Smith motor as the right
one. My main machine has a "Skip built"
DC conversion motor. Got the motor cheap,
because, the end bell mount was cracked.
('m NOT using the end bell mount, but the
"56" mount.)

Steve, I'm starting to seriously consider one of those DC motors from Skip.

IMHO, without a doubt, best addition to
a Model 10.

So assuming a DC motor, what is the maximum RPM the 10ER spindle can be run?

6800 fer sure (hispeed/5 on a speed changer).

Per the Motion Industries website, the Fafir (Timken) 202KLL3 spindle bearings are rated for 14,000 RPM, and the 205KLL2 drive-sleeve bearings are rated for 9070 RPM. If you use a substitute, it will probably have a different speed rating. A couple other bearings I checked seemed to indicate that the higher-speed bearings had looser internal clearances (to handle more thermal expansion), so the tradeoff may be a slight decrease in precision.
The belt drive may also be a limiting factor. Belt type, length, and pully radii all have to be considered.
Shaft dynamics could also be a factor, but I doubt that it is an issue for the 10ER spindle at these speeds.
Finally, if using a fixed pulley ratio, keep in mind that if you increase the drive ratio to get more top-end speed, you will lose a proportional amount of torque capability.
