What is this old thing?

This came to me as part of an OWWM haul a while back. For a while, I hadn't really paid much attention to it assuming it was just a shelf bracket or hanging plant holder or something. But, it caught my eye while cleaning up the other day and I realized it has some unique features that indicate it had a specific purpose that I just can't figure out.

It only has one screw hole for attaching to a wall or ceiling along with a pair of V-notches. I assume this is for swinging it one way or the other but letting the notch catch a screw or nail head to stabilize it. The other arm has a long slot with either "8 1/2" or "6 1/2" in raised letters on the edge. Any clue what this was used for?

That could easily be a part for a treadle sewing machine/cabinet. My mom had one many many years ago, and I remember something like that on it.

Just guessing ... :)

Consensus at OWWM forum is a sink bracket. A google search for vintage sink brackets confirms this as likely.
