Some Nice Offerings in the New Catalog

One item in particular caught my eye. The 6" faceplate looks real interesting and especially for anyone who does not have an alignment plate or a perfectly flat saw blade. I am thinking that it might be a perfect tool to assist in aligning the main table to the "blade". The catalog says it is made of cast iron and has been milled and balance and is without wobble. The price is about the same as my precision alignment plate.
The idea of a hard copy catalog to browse through during those otherwise idle times is great.

The faceplate is a cast item, it is not machined and that is fine for turning but not for other uses. When I wanted to use my smaller faceplate for another application I had to flatten it, it was amazing how far off it was. So while it might work for the application you have you will need to check it.

The die cast aluminum face plates do not have a machined face, but all CI ones I have are machined including model 10 vintage. Back side rough, but the face is machined.

I don't think these are die cast, to expensive to do but just the same they are cast how how it is done does not matter. Here is mine as photo proof the surface is not nice and smooth and likely not flat either. It doesn't mater for lathe work as you mount wood to it then flatten that before mounting the workpiece in most cases.

I've never had the need to "fix" it but it could be done just like I did my smaller version.
Just don't expect too much from the product if you are not using it as intended.

Good information and a good warning. The face plate shown is definitely not suitable as a reference surface for critical alignment purposes and it was not intended to be used that way.
But, it also does not look as though it was milled. The face plate advertisement in the new catalog states that it is milled, balanced and wobble free. That may favorably effect its usefulness as a reference surface.
A similar photo of the new face plate is needed.
