Hi, i just got my first shopsmith, which also happens to be one of the first shopsmiths. serial number 3994 shopsmith 10E. it's in pretty good shape overall of its age, but i plan on cleaning it up nice and shiny, and giving her a new paint job. it really is a wonderful machine and cannot wait to get to building with it! i do have one question, that i havent been able to figure out for the life of me, how in the world to i add tension to the belt?

Welcome to the madness. I do not have a 10E/ER so do not know the answer to your question, but at the top of the Maintenance and Repair section are some sticky posts. In one of them is a link to the restored 10E/ER manuals by Everett Davis that may provide you the answer. There is a lot of info in those sticky posts, especially for someone new to the Shop Smith equipment.

Just release the two set screws that hold the motor mount posts and let the whole assembly slide down until the belt is at the right tension. The set screws are located at the bottom of the head stock where the motor mount posts enter the head stock.

There’s a great collection of 10E/R documents available for free at VintageMachinery.org. These include Everett’s restored manual, and a whole bunch of original Magna Engineering publications.
