I am a new owner of a Model 500 and I recently, following internet videos, cleaned and lubricated my headstock with success. However, after I tested it and buttoned it up I noticed on my workbench a small what I would call "a pin". i don't recall disturbing a pin but it must have fallen out. Looking at the model 500 parts list, it appears to be part # 88 (457008), "rollpin". I plan to open it back up and find out if that is indeed the case and/or find its place but before I do, I am asking the community what is the function of that pin and how critical is it to the operation of the unit?

I don't have a 500 or the documentation for one so I will be of little help. However, I would recommend that you NOT use the machine until you have a better idea of where it came from. Roll pins are their to hold something in place. Not being there could be hazardous.

Be patient. There are many 500 users here on the forum. You will have a qualified answer shortly.

If part #88 fell out, you would lose the speed control. The quadrant would fall out without this rollpin, and the speed control would be disabled.

I have worked on this part of the machine and that roll pin is very tight in its hole so it can't fall out unless something else is broken.

I just had this same problem happen to me. Although the roll pin that I found is not the roll pin that holds the speed controller together. It’s a smaller mystery roll pin...
No solution yet sorry.

The other smaller roll pin goes through the button on the speed control bearing.without this the clip would fly out.

Thank you all for your replies. I opened it up and I agree with garys in that it is NOT part # 88 because it is intact and not going to come out. I cannot locate the "speed control bearing" or a rollpin associated with it on the 500 diagram. Can you give me a little more information/location please? What main part is the bearing close to?

Thank you again. I figured it couldn't be that hard to find speed control bearings and I did and lo and behold the missing rollpin was indeed item 112 on the parts diagram and it holds in the retaining ring associated with the bearings. Clearly the unit would not run for long without it!
