We were directed to this:
Got the keys made, mailed me the receipts(used a credit card), and after a little cleaning up of some burrs we tried them and the worked.

This was a first for us. How about you, have you tired this and what were your experiences?

I'm for going to a real person behind the counter at a hardware store that can make the key and polish the burs afterwards.

The real bugger is if you need a new key fob for your car... It will need programmed before you can use it. There is a programming sequence for most. Dealers want to charge $80 or more for that. You can find the sequences on the internet for most.

I should have mentioned, this is the only key machine they have now..... so at this store it is not an option to have someone make one for you.

Also this is for house keys not auto keys. They don't do car keys here anymore.

I don't mind trying new things but certain things I've tried and didn't like. One of the reasons I don't like to shop at Home Depot, I hate self checkouts and they keep trying to make me use one. If they don't have a person checking out I don't buy things.

The key machine was rather fun to use and we even got the wife a pink house key, the deadbolt is still old brass but that way it is easy to tell them apart. I have a key identifier on mine cause I hate to have to try and get it wrong, even sometimes.

I certainly agree with you but that is true of just about any retail place you go to. It certainly depends on employee knowledge of the question asked.

We have a HD and a Lowes about 10 miles from the house. They are only about 1/2 mile apart and these are the ones we go to most often because they are closest. As such we visit both of them within 10 minutes of each other quite often. On any given day there seems to be more people in HD than Lowes and this is very consistent. There seems to be more employees on the floor at HD than Lowes. The HD employees seem to go out of the way more than Lowes to greet you even if you are just walking down an isle.

I am sure this is store dependent and is a reflection of the individual store management.

Must be the case. It's the exact opposite where we live. OTOH, Ace has both friendly and, knowledgeable help and plenty of them.

I don't have any local big box stores and I haven't used our only local lumber place for years.
We were supposed to get a Lowes a few years back but they put it on hold and it has not happened yet. Much of the time I make a quick run to about 16 miles west of me to a Lowes there. When I want more choice I head to a very active community at the south edge of Indy called Greenwood / Southport. I have other big box stores within 20 to 30 miles but at the Greenwood Southport area (about 20 miles from me) because I have 3 big box stores there, Lowes, Home Depot and Menards all near each other. There are also a zillion other stores close as well. The big advantage to going there is if I don't find what I am looking for at one I just move on to the next...
I find all three of them quite satisfactory.
