Hello everyone I'm Joe and I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a 10ER off craigslist and am working on restoring it. I have just about everything apart except I can't seem to figure out how to remove the headstock pulley assemble from the headstock. I removed the set screws from the headstock and the pulley but neither the assembly nor the pulley itself will budge, not even a tiny bit. I was wondering if I was missing something, because the rest of the disassembly was pretty uneventful until this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated

First, welcome to the forum. You will find a wealth of information here for your 10ER as well as everything else. Many many helpful and knowledgeable folks here. Don't hesitate to ask questions and remember a picture is worth 1000 words.

You are not missing anything. The drive sleeve (that is what it is called) assembly is a slip fit in the head stock. That is why there is a set screw to hold it. A good soaking with penetrating oil (I use Kroil) should help. There are two bearings so apply the oil to both bearings. One from the outside and the other one from the inside.

Assuming you are going to install new bearings (I would) then use a large 1 1/2" or larger wood dowel and tap on the drive sleeve from the quill end. Since you are replacing the bearings there is nothing else you can damage so don't be shy but don't get carried away either. It should come right out.

The drive sleeve has a bearing on each end and a spacer between. There is a set screw(back side of the headstock)that secures the spacer(and therefore the whole assembly). The pulley should separate from the sleeve.

He did say he removed the set screws.

Thank you very much, the penetrating oil worked great to get the drive sleeve out of the headstock. Now the pulley will not come off, even with a generous amount of penetrating oil. Any suggestions?

You might have to let it sit for a day or two and then reapply the oil for another day or two.

Yes I have one like that. No manner of persuasion made it come off. The pulley was damaged and needed to be replaced so I used A LOT of persuasion to get it off with no results. It is now with a friend who has access to a hydraulic press. Really strange.

Same problem, a piece of the pulley is cracked off so i wanted to replace it

Then take it to someone that has a press. Also realize that that pulley is not standard. It has a 13/16" bore and is not available today anywhere I have looked. However, they do come up fairly often on eBay. Just watch daily and pick your price and condition.

It is entirely possible that the pulley set screw created burrs on the drive sleeve that are making removal difficult.

An alternative to buying a used pulley is to get an upgrade (machined vs cast) pulley from MKC tools. https://www.mkctools.com/10erparts.htm
